Mel Brooks' History of the World -- Part I : 20th Century Fox

Mel Brooks's 1981, three-part comedy--set in the Stone Age, the Roman Empire, and the French Revolution--is pure guilty pleasure. Narrated by Orson Welles and featuring a lot of famous faces in guest appearances (beyond the official cast), the film opens well with Sid Caesar playing a caveman, then moves along to the unlikely but somehow hilarious juxtaposition of Caesar's soldiers (the other Caesar, not Sid) with pot humor, and ends on a dumb-funny note in the French bloodbath. This is a take-it-or-leave-it movie, and it works best if you're in a take-it-or-leave-it mood. --Tom Keogh - $14.99

Lost Empires (3 DVD Set) : Goldhill Home Media

This extraordinary Masterpiece Theatre featured production based on the novel by JB Priestley, and featuring one of the last performances of Sir Laurence Olivier, takes you to the last days of Britain's innocence and the glamorous, magical world of the great music halls - which once brought entertainment to millions. In 1913, young Richard Herncastle, played by Colin Firth, escapes from a stuffy, provincial English background into the glitter and excitement of the theatre world. Funny, sad, and nostalgic, Lost Empires, follows Richard from his naïve, country upbringing to join his uncle Nick Ollanton, a famous music hall illusionist - known as the Indian Magician, Ganga Dun. The mystery of illusions, on and off the stage, is eventually shattered for Richard, whose dream of becoming a famous painter becomes sidetracked while he contends with men gone nearly insane, the lusts of countless women, and a murder that hangs over his head. As Lost Empires opens, looming on the horizon is World War I, which will destroy so much of Britain's tradition, including the great era of the Empire music hall. Soon the cinema will replace the eccentric and colorful performers whose home is the world of variety. - $84.00

Superman III : Warner Home Video

Actors: Christopher Reeve. Richard Pryor. Jackie Cooper. Robert Vaughn. Annette O'Toole. Christopher Reeves. Pamela Stephenson. Robert Vaughn. Margot Kidder. Gavan O'Herlihy Director: Richard Lester. Studio: Warner Home Video. Rated: NR. Runtime: 2 Hours 5 Minutes. Features: Color Enhancing its comic book action with broad comedy -- and lots of it -- Superman III gives Christopher Reeve's Man of Steel a delightful foil in Richard Pryor, whose energetic performance adds considerable oomph to this 1983 entry in the series. Pryor plays a skittish, wisecracking computer operator who inadvertently contributes to Superman's near defeat at the hands of archvillain Robert Vaughn. Annette O'Toole contributes additional spice as Clark Kent's old flame, Lana Lang, who sparks the mild-mannered reporter's fires while Margot Kidder's Lois Lane has a diminished role. Director Richard Lester sacrifices some of the series' mythic qualities in his single-minded pursuit of laughs, as evidenced by an opening-reel slapstick smorgasbord, in addition to Pryor's typical manic antics. Less dramatically intense than the first two installments, Superman III still offers plenty of superpowered action for fans and is clearly the fastest, funniest, and most family friendly film in the series. PRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL NOTES: Aspect Ratio: Cinemascope (2.35:1). Presentation: Wide Screen. Sound: stereo. Features: Interactive menus; Theatrical trailer; Scene access ; Languages: English & Français; Subtitles: English, Français, Español & Português. Language: English, Français. The Best of Not the 9 O'Clock News : A&E Home Video

Attention, comedy fans: NOT THE NINE O'CLOCK NEWS is the real thing. This is scathing, no-holds-barred Brit humor at its best. Rapid-fire skits starring Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) are as politically incorrect as they are side-bustingly funny, sparing no one as they take on the British Royal Family, Margaret Thatcher, Scotland Yard, country music, Christianity, devil worship, punk rock and bathroom etiquette. NOT THE NINE O'CLOCK NEWS is so irreverent that when the pilot was due to air in April 1979, the BBC cancelled it due to its incendiary political content. When at last it aired, the greatest comedy group to hit England since Monty Python's Flying Circus stormed the airwaves and revolutionized British and American television alike. Discover the show that set the standard for the anarchic cynicism that defined the alternative comedy of the 80's. - $4.38
